Michael,
That's a great couple of questions and very common ones as well. First of all, faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (or the Mormon Church) DON'T still practice polygamy today. Most people don't know that, but the church actually discourages polygamy.

As for why the church used to allow it, let me give you a response that may be a little hard to swallow. We believe in prophets: men that are called from God and speak for God on the earth. Joseph Smith was called to be a prophet of God in the 1800's and we have a living prophet today.

God told the people in the early days of the church to practice polygamy and, because we as members of the church have gained personal convictions of the truth of this church and gospel, they obeyed.

Most did not understand why either, just like you and I. But they obeyed. Adam didn't know why he should build an altar to God. Abraham didn't know why he should sacrifice his son. But they trusted in the Lord and so do we.

If you would like to find out how you can learn for yourself that what I am telling you is true, you can read the Book of Mormon or talk to missionaries and learn for yourself. I know of myself that God talks to prophets today. It's awesome!

We may post this on the discussion page too. Sorry for the long answer did that help at all?

Hello! I know that on Facebook there is a group of people that are dedicated to fulfilling President Monson's call to pray for missionary work to open world wide. I was so inspired by that, that I created a video about it. It is less than two minutes and I think it would be great if you could feature it on your site. Thanks!
